This program is suitable for those possessing a respectful attitude towards peers and instructors, a willingness to practice self-discipline, and an interest in building strength, confidence, and self-defense skills.

The BJJ Fundamentals program introduces students to essential Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques and principles, focusing on self-defense, body control, and conditioning. Each class includes warm-ups, technique practice, drills, and controlled sparring. Students will develop skills in both offense and defense, learning how to apply BJJ techniques effectively and respectfully.

Students will develop foundational Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques for both offense and defense, building physical conditioning, flexibility, and coordination essential to the practice. They will gain an understanding of key principles such as leverage, body positioning, and control, which form the basis of effective BJJ techniques.

Alongside physical skills, students will cultivate respect, discipline, and resilience, valuable traits fostered through consistent practice. Ultimately, they will gain confidence in their self-defense abilities and feel comfortable applying techniques safely in a controlled environment.

  • Class Structure

    • Warm-Up and Conditioning (10-15 minutes)
Each session begins with warm-up exercises to prepare the body for training, focusing on flexibility, coordination, and endurance. Exercises may include joint rotations, light cardio, and BJJ-specific movements like shrimping, bridging, and rolling.
    • Technique of the Day (25-30 minutes)
Each class highlights a specific technique, covering both offensive and defensive movements. Techniques are demonstrated step-by-step, and students practice with a partner under instructor guidance. Common techniques include:

      • Guard and Passing the Guard – Learning control and escape techniques.
      • Basic Sweeps – Techniques to change from defensive to offensive positions.
      • Submissions – Introduction to fundamental submissions like the armbar, choke, and triangle.
      • Escapes – Basic escapes from various holds, emphasizing safety and control.
    • Drills and Application (10-15 minutes)
Students practice drills that reinforce the technique of the day, often in a controlled setting. Drills focus on repetition, timing, and building muscle memory, which helps students understand the practical applications of each technique.
    • Controlled Sparring (Rolling) (5-10 minutes)
At the end of each class, students participate in controlled sparring or “rolling” with a partner to practice applying techniques in real-time. This allows them to build confidence, adapt to resistance, and improve their decision-making in a live setting.
  • Ongoing Themes and Rotating Focus

Each month, the class will feature a specific focus or theme to build foundational skills while keeping sessions fresh and progressive:

    • Month 1: Introduction to Basic Positions and Movements
Focus on learning guard positions, passing the guard, and essential escapes.
    • Month 2: Fundamental Sweeps and Transitions
Learn basic sweeps and movement drills to transition between offensive and defensive positions.
    • Month 3: Submissions and Control Techniques
Introduction to basic submission holds, focusing on technique, control, and safety.
    • Month 4: Self-Defense Applications
Emphasis on real-world applications of BJJ techniques, including standing defenses, escapes, and takedowns.
    • Month 5: Positional Control and Defense
Develop control techniques to maintain dominant positions and work on defensive escapes.
    • Month 6: Strategy and Flow
Introduction to combining techniques smoothly, practicing sequences, and developing individual style.

Themes will repeat in a cycle, with new variations and advanced techniques introduced as students progress.
